How to Make a Doctor Who Costume

Since the revival of the Doctor Who series, David Tennant's version of the time lord has become phenomenally popular. The tenth doctor's costume might not seem unique on the surface. However, it has a few quirks that can help you to be recognizable without having to explain your costume. To carry off this Halloween costume, you should preferably be quite tall and slender. If it's done well, this costume should create an ineffable quality of geek chic.

Instructions

1. Wear a basic white button-down shirt, but leave the top button open. Put on a tie, but keep the knot loose and messy.

2. Get a slender, brown pin-striped suit. The pants should be close-fitting and the jacket should be just a little bit too tight. Fasten the top couple of buttons on the jacket, but leave the bottom ones open. If you have trouble finding a brown suit you can afford, look on eBay or check your local thrift shop.

3. Find some all-white high-top sneakers. Be sure to wear socks with them, as they can get rather stuffy.

4. Wear a long, medium-brown trenchcoat that reaches your lower calves. Leave it open.

5. Get a tire pressure gauge. Secure a small, shiny blue sequin to the top, or attach a battery-powered blue LED light assembly. This will serve as the doctor's sonic screwdriver.

6. Find an ordinary pair of red and blue 3-D glasses. These can also be found on eBay. You can wear them the entire time you're out for Halloween, or interchange them with a pair of geeky, dark brown rectangular-shaped eyeglass frames. Remove the lenses if they're not the right prescription for your eyes.

7. Arrange your hair in a short and tousled style. Use a little mousse to make it spiky on top, and try to make the bangs jut out in front of your forehead. If you don't have any facial hair, attach some thick sideburns to the side of your head with spirit gum.

Tips & Warnings

• The clothing for the Doctor Who costume should be rather rumpled.
• Your best bet after David Tennant's Doctor Who is Tom Baker's. He wore a dark brown overcoat, a checkered vest, a red scarf, a hat and a long multicolored knit scarf.
• On Halloween evening, if anyone doesn't know who you're supposed to be, dare them to guess.
• Make this a group costume by pairing your doctor with any of his three companions.
