If you’re ever caught in a bind with a bottle of wine and no corkscrew, you can still open it efficiently as long as you have a toolbox around. Even if you do have a corkscrew on-hand, using this quick fix to open a bottle of wine is a novel idea to lighten a stuffy get-together or just to impress a group with your resourcefulness.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Holding the bottle firmly in place, gently push a screw of any size about 3/4 the screw’s length into the cork.

  2. Step 2

Take a hammer and, using the clawed end, hook the screw and pull it gently to one side. You want to slant the screw just a bit so it won’t slide straight out of the cork.

  3. Step 3

Now pull up gently with the hammer's clawed end, lifting the screw and attached cork little by little. You may not be able to remove it in one single motion and you don’t want to pull the screw out without the cork, so use short, smooth motions.

Tips & Warnings
  • You may want to practice on an inexpensive bottle of wine so you don’t crack the cork in a bottle of fine wine.
