Decide what type of tape measure you would like to use. A bulky worker's tape measure may make measuring a window difficult. While a flat tailor’s tape measure may make things a little simpler. Either way can work if you only have one type on hand.

Measure the window right to left at first. This would be the length of the window. Place your tape measure in the crack of the window between the frame and the glass. Hold it steady. Move the tape measure to the other side. Again, you want the measurements of the window only. Place it in the crack between the frame and the glass. Then write down the measurement in length--for example, 1 foot 23 inches long.

Use the tape measure to obtain the height of the window. If the window is large, you may need a friend to help you. Start at the top of the window. Place the tape measure between the frame and the glass. Move down until you have reached the bottom frame. Again, place the tape measure on the glass next to the frame. Write down the measurement on your paper--for example, 2 feet 5 inches high.

Tips & Warnings
You will want to measure the window two or three times to be sure that you have received the correct measurement. Costly mistakes can happen if you are even off by a few inches.
