1
Select a tree. Choose a plant with the largest possible root ball, and squeeze the soil to check that it is moist and firmly packed. The burlap or netting should be intact. Loose soil, damaged burla, and large mesh netting will all expose the root ball to the drying effects of air. When the wrappings are moved, fibrous root growth should be detectable.

2
Choose the planting site. When you are satisfied that you have the right tree, prepare its new home well and plant as soon as possible after buying. Your new addition may look tiny or lonely at first, but don't be tempted to over plant. Keep to the correct spacing and the tree will fill in as it grows.

3
Prepare a planting site. Weed and rake the planting area. Use a shovel to dig a planting hole twice as wide as the root ball and larger if planting in clay.
-
4
Place the tree in the hole using the base and not the stalk of the tree to move it. Adjust the tree depth, if necessary, by pulling dirt into the hole. Once the tree is at the right depth, then remove the burlap or other wrapping.
-
5
Stake the tree if necessary. If you need a stake, drive it in before back filling. Stakes can be used vertically or angled; angled ones can be added after planting. Use a buckle and spacer tie with the buckle away from the trunk to prevent chafing.
-
6
Back fill the hole once the tree is in place. Use your hands or a hoe to pull the soil back into the hole. Pull soil around on all sides to completely fill the hole.
-
7
Firm the soil around the tree in stages. Pack firmly and check the depth as you go.
-
8
Water well and apply 2 to 3 inches of mulch, keeping it clear of the tree's trunk. Water regularly until the plant is established and continue to care for it as needed.
