How to Play Tikal
Tikal is a board game about jungle exploration and the 1999 Spiel des Jahres winner. In Tikal, players each lead a team of explorers. On your turn, you explore one more space on the giant board of unexplored jungle and then send members of your expedition out to uncover temples and gather treasure. Tikal plays well with two, three or four players, and is always lots of laughs.

1
Give each player all the pieces of one color, as well as an action sheet. Shuffle the tiles face down and put them in stacks by letter. (A tiles first, then B tiles, then C tiles). Choose a starting player.
-
2
Start your turn by flipping over the top tile in the stack, and placing it on the board next to one of the starting squares or any other placed tile. You then receive 10 action points to spend with your explorers.
-
-
3
Place an explorer on one of your base camps by spending one action point. The starting square is a base camp for all players.
-
4
Move your explorers between two tiles by spending one action point for each stone between the two tiles. If no stones connect two tiles, you must find an alternate path with at least one stone.
-
5
Add a level to a temple sharing a tile with your explorer by spending two action points. Take the next highest number and place it on the temple. For example, if the temple currently displays a 3, place a 4 on top of it. You can only do this once per explorer per temple and twice per temple per turn.
-
6
Pick up a piece of treasure on the same space as your explorer for three action points and place the treasure in front of you.
-
7
Place one of your two base camps on any empty tile where you have an explorer by spending five action points. Empty tiles have no temple or treasure.
-
8
End your turn once you have spent ten action points.
-
9
Begin a scoring round whenever a player flips over a volcano tile. Take ten actions and then score each temple on a tile where you have a majority of explorers. For example, if you have the most explorers on spaces with temples showing 1, 4, and 5, you would score 10 points. You also gain a point for each treasure you have picked up, with a bonus point for every pair of similar treasures. The next player then takes ten actions and scores until all players have scored, and then the game proceeds.
-
10
End the game after the last tile is placed on the board. Each player receives a final turn of 10 actions and then scores his temples and treasures. Whoever has the most points wins.
