Instructions

    • 1

Use a large prybar to remove the current crown molding. Try to be careful and cause as little damage as possible when doing this. The less damage you cause now, the less you will have to fix later.

    • 2

Measure and cut your new crown molding to fit the area. Do this using a miter or angle saw. When cutting the molding, work slowly to make a smooth edge.

    • 3

Coat the inside of the crown molding with standard mounting glue and keep the coat relatively thin so that leaking is minimal. Make sure to run your finger across the surface to spread the glue evenly.

    • 4

After allowing the glue to set up for two to three minutes, apply the crown molding to the wall. Secure the molding with small brad nails, placed every 1 to 2 feet. Set these nails in as far as possible to minimize their appearance.

    • 5

Once the molding is secured, take a metal scraper and remove all excess glue that has been pushed out from under the molding. After doing this, allow the glue to dry for three to four hours before continuing.

    • 6

Use wall putty to cover the brad nail holes and to fill in cracks under and above the crown molding. This will smooth out the job and make the molding look much better when painted.

    • 7

Apply paint and finish the the molding as desired. You may also have to apply paint around the molding where glue has leaked or where damage has been done.

Tips & Warnings

  • The more putty you use to fill in cracks and holes, the better. Don't be afraid to go very heavy on the putty.

  • Always take caution when using saws or any other power tools.

  • When painting, try to ventilate the room as much as possible.
