Step 2
Book reservations for accommodations in advance. Winston-Salem holds conventions and sports events throughout the year, so waiting until you arrive in the city is not recommended. Winston-Salem is home to a wide variety of good accommodations, including hotels, inns and bed and breakfasts.

Step 3
Visit Winston-Salem’s historical sites. Old Salem is a tribute to the original Moravian settlers of Salem (merged with the town of Winston in 1913). Visiting Old Salem is like stepping back in time, with people in period dress and a chance to sample Moravian baked goods. The attraction contains a children’s museum, gardens and both Salem Academy and Salem College (see Resources below). Historic Bethabara Park (bethabarapark.com) is an important second stop to exploring Moravian history in Winston-Salem.

Step 4
Visit Winston-Salem’s art museums and galleries. The Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art and the Reynolda House Museum of American Art are within walking distance of one another. Winston-Salem’s Art District in downtown gives visitors a chance to view and purchase local art in a trendy setting (see Resources below). Tour the North Carolina School of the Arts (ncarts.edu), which hosts ongoing events and exhibits.

Step 5
Entertain children of all ages in Winston-Salem. The Children’s Museum of Winston-Salem and SciWorks (sciworks.org) are both excellent half- to full-day excursions for families with young children. Reynolda Gardens at the Reynolda House (reynoldagardens.org) has wooded trails, open spaces and seasonal gardens for families to explore during warm weather (see Resources below).

Step 6
Find unusual shops and spas. Winston-Salem’s Reynolda Village (reynoldavillage.com) houses unique boutiques, bookstores and a spa within the historic buildings of Reynolda Manor. Hanes Mall (shophanesmall.com) has over 200 stores, making it one of the largest malls in the Southeast. The West End Historic District offers antiques and gallery shopping, along with several small eateries (see Resources below).

Step 7
Dine in one of Winston-Salem’s one-of-a-kind restaurants. Mary’s Of Course (marysofcourse.com) is open Tuesday through Sunday for breakfast and lunch, and serves local sustainable foods. The Old Salem Tavern is located at Old Salem and is open for lunch and dinner. Both Reynolds Village and the West End Historic District offer local dining options.
