Instructions

    • 1

Slather your skin with a high-SPF sunscreen that protects against both UVA and UVB rays. You have to limit sun exposure if you wish to reduce your freckles. Wear sunscreen daily, even in the winter months. Cover all exposed areas of the body with sunscreen and reapply often.

    • 2

Wear a broad-rimmed hat and large sunglasses if you will be in the sun for extended periods of time. As sunscreen is not foolproof, it's wise to take additional sun protective measures.

    • 3

Cleanse your skin with an alpha hydroxy cleanser. Alpha hydroxy acids have been shown to fade sun spots.

    • 4

Apply a fade or bleaching cream to your sun spots. Most drug stores carry over-the-counter versions. It will take several weeks to see results from the cream.

    • 5

Use a vitamin C serum on your skin. Vitamin C has been shown to brighten overall complexion and reduce dark spots on the skin.

    • 6

Mix equal parts lemon juice and honey. Apply the mixture to your sun spots and leave there for approximately 15 minutes. The acid in the lemon juice will gently lighten the sun spots.

    • 7

See a dermatologist. More serious bleaching creams are available with a prescription.

    • 8

Consider laser treatments. Laser photofacials are effective at significantly lightening sun spots. The laser breaks apart the pigment in the freckles, causing them to fade. Be aware that repeated laser sessions are usually necessary to achieve desired results.

    • 9

Get a series of chemical peels. The chemicals applied react with the top layers of your skin, essentially burning them. Once the top layers peel away, new skin is revealed which will have fewer sun spots. Your skin will be red and irritated for a few days after a peel.

Tips & Warnings

  • Your sun spots will return once you are again exposed to the sun.

  • Be aware that concrete, sand, snow and water all reflect and intensity the sun's rays.

  • The sun's rays can cause melanoma, a deadly form of skin cancer. Protect your skin every time you go outside.
