Reduce Shedding in Pug Dogs

Pug dogs are notorious for their shedding. While the degree of shedding will vary slightly from dog to dog, every Pug will shed. Fawn-colored Pugs tend to shed more than their black-colored counterparts. While you can't completely eliminate your Pug dog's shedding, you can take steps to reduce it. It does require diligence on your part. If you skip your maintenance routine for a few weeks, you'll notice the shedding will increase significantly.

Instructions

    • 1

Brush your Pug daily. This will help to remove fur that is already loose before it sheds all over your house. Take your Pug outside for his daily brushing so you don't have to worry about cleaning up the hair afterward. Try a rake-like comb, as these combs target the undercoats.

    • 2

Bathe your Pug every two to three weeks. Regular baths will encourage a healthy coat on your dog which means less overall shedding. Use an appropriate dog shampoo. If you use human shampoo on your dog, it can dry her skin, leading to more shedding. Also, opt for tepid water as hot temperatures encourage shedding.

    • 3

Dry your Pug with a clean towel. Do not use a blow dryer. Your Pug will shed more if you focus hot air on his skin.

    • 4

Shave your Pug's coat so it is 1/8 inch long. A professional groomer will be able to do the job well and you'll find less shed hair around your home.

    • 5

Assess your Pug's food. Oftentimes, increased shedding can be caused by poor nutrition. Your Pug's food should contain omega fatty acids which are essential for healthy skin and fur.

    • 6

Add a teaspoon of salmon or hemp seed oil to your dog's food. This will encourage a healthy coat and help reduce shedding.

    • 7

Try specialty pet shampoos that discourage shedding. Many of these shampoos contain tea tree oil which has been shown to encourage healthy coats and reduce the amount of hair shed.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use lint rollers to pick up stray fur around your home and car.

  • Take your Pug to the vet if his shedding is terribly excessive.
