Groom and Clip a Peekapoo

A peekapoo is a designer hybrid breed of dog, created when a Pekingese mates with a poodle. Known as lap dogs, peekapoos weigh between four and 20 pounds when full grown. Despite their small size, Peekapoo dogs make great watchdogs due to their protective personalities and loud barks. Peekapoos work well for those with allergies as they do not shed a great deal. Their wavy coats come in a variety of different colors such as white, black, cream, gray, brown and apricot. Since their coats grow to medium and long lengths, regular grooming is required.

Instructions

    • 1

Brush your peekapoo daily to avoid tangles and mats. Due to the fine nature of their hair, peekapoos are particularly prone to tangles. Use a comb to de-tangle tough spots. If you keep your pup clipped short, you can brush him twice a week rather than daily.

    • 2

Shampoo your dog every three to five weeks. Choose a shampoo that is designed for dogs. Human shampoos may cause irritation on your pup's skin.

    • 3

Condition your peekapoo's fur with a dog conditioner. While some dogs don't need conditioner, it is recommended for peekapoos as it will keep their coats silky.

    • 4

Brush your peekapoo's teeth once to twice a week, using toothpaste and a toothbrush designed for dogs. Regular brushing reduces tartar and helps improve bad breath.

    • 5

Wipe in between the folds on your dog's mouth, using a wet cloth. Since peekapoos have face folds due to their Pekingese genes, food and other particles can gather in them. For best results, clean between the folds after every meal.

    • 6

Clean your peekapoo's anal area every three to four weeks. Bits of feces may cling to the hair surrounding the anus, sometimes causing blockages. Use a wet, warm cloth to wipe away any fecal matter and bacteria in the area.

    • 7

Clip your Peekapoo's hair with electronic clippers. Choose clippers that are designed for dog hair, as human hair clippers won't always cut through cottony dog fur. Enlist the help of a friend who will hold your pup steady while you clip him. Take extra care as you clip the hair around your dog's anus, feet and belly.

    • 8

Use grooming scissors to trim the hair around your pup's eyes, nose, mouth and ears. Be very careful in this sensitive area as a sudden movement can result in severe damage. The hair around these areas should be short so your dog can see, hear, breathe and eat without issue.

    • 9

Cut your Peekapoo's toenails every five to 12 weeks. Cut the nail above the quick, the red vein that runs through the toenail. If you cut the quick, it will bleed slightly.

    • 10

Inspect your dog's skin. Look for any hot spots, rashes or inflammation. Make this health check part of your regular grooming routine. If you spot anything abnormal, take her to the vet.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you don't have time to clip your peekapoo at home, take him to a professional groomer.

  • Never use electric clippers near your dog's eyes, nose, mouth or ears.
