1
Think of a name for your group. The name should reflect what the group is about--Southern Screenwriters or Smith Family Chat. Once you have the title for your group, write out a short introduction that you want possible members to see before signing up.
-
2
Go to groups.google.com (see Resources). On the top of the right hand side of the page, you will see a button that says "start a new group." Click on this button and it will walk you through the process. The first step will be setting up a Google account if you do not already have one. The remaining steps are entering your title and you introduction.

3
Invite people to join. Before getting to the new home page of your group, Google will ask you if you want to invite members. If you do, include their email addresses in the top text box and type an invitation message in the bottom box. Click "continue" and you will go to your groups homepage.
-
4
Click on "group settings" on the right hand side of your screen. This is where you tell Google what category your group is in, plus also what type of memberships you allow. Do you want all messages approved by you before they post? This is where you will find this option and others.
-
5
Be prepared for spammers to attempt to join your group. Setting your group setting to where you, as the administrator, must approve all members can alleviate this problem.
-
6
Add a first post to your group. Also add any files and photos you wish to share. As more people join, you may find that running the group is taking more time than you want to spend. Consider giving one or more trusted member’s manager status to help with the day to day chores of running the group.

Tips & Warnings
There is no limit to the number of Google groups you can create. It’s easy to have one for every hobby or interest you have.
Consider setting up a separate folder in your email program for messages from you group. This makes day to day tasks easier to keep up with.
The more public your group, that is, open membership, the more likely the possibility you will be targeted by Spam messages and trolls.
