For many, makeup is synonymous with freedom. You can be whomever you want with each face you put on and wash off. This is where runway makeup gets its appeal: Fantasy becomes reality for those who don runway makeup like a mask. However, not all stylish divas crave an outrageous look. The following suggested guidelines are for makeup lovers who want an everyday wearable version of catwalk trends.

1. Focus on one trend at a time. Although some looks combined may work, do not attempt two--or more--distinctly different and strong makeup styles, especially if you are uncertain. Even though a silver lip with fake magenta lashes stands out in your mind, you want to look like yourself in broad daylight. Looks that are monochromatic can work for everyday because the colors used are merely a variation in tone, density and intensity of the same one.

2. Focus on one feature at a time. If you are going for very bold eyes, tone the rest of your face down with makeup that does not compete for attention. The same goes for unusually daring lips or stunning cheeks.

3. Try a sheer version of very opaque colors. Along the same lines, tone down strong textures. That fiercely metallic fuchsia eyeshadow won't look so intimidating if you wear it in a shimmery formulation instead.

4. Save the more playful trends for when you go clubbing or partying. Those gold glitter-tipped eyelashes won't be so acceptable at the office, but they will look pretty in the shimmering lights on the dance floor.

5. Limit your use of a striking color. For instance, if you don't want to water down your vibrant indigo eyeshadow, use it to line your eyes instead of wearing it all over your lids. You could also use it on your eyelashes instead. Touch flecks of it to still-wet lashes after mascara application.
