There are some things you can do to look thinner when going to a job interview. As with anyone, dressing for an interview means looking professional and polished. Read on for some specific ideas on how to dress your best for a job interview.

From Quick Guide: Big & Tall Basics
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Suit
  • White Dress Shirt
  • Tie
  • Black Dress Shoes
  1. Step 1

Choose carefully. Dark colors, longer jackets and monochromatic looks are your best choices. But be careful about too much black. You don’t want to look like you’re going to a wake. Dark navy with or without a vertical pinstripe is a good choice in wool or, for warm weather, a blend. You can never go wrong with a clean, ironed white shirt.

  2. Step 2

Wearing a jacket is great for covering up the paunch if you are only on the cusp of being portly. Whatever you wear, make sure it fits you well and you are comfortable and relaxed. For tall men, average-length jackets are your best bet, but be sure that the sleeves aren’t too short for your arms. A sport jacket can be a better choice than a suit if you are working in a dress-down profession. That translates to any place where you do not have to wear a tie to work most days.

  3. Step 3

Dress more formally than you think the other guys will dress. Don’t look sloppy or mismatched for an interview. A suit or jacket with a white dress shirt and dress slacks will give you an edge. Forget about the fact that the rules for interview attire have relaxed in recent years. Larger men will appear more serious and dedicated than other guys dressed in business casual. Wear a belt and skip the suspenders, which can look odd on larger men.

  4. Step 4

Keep your tie on and tie it correctly. No slouchy looking ties or ill-fitted collars will do. If your collar is too tight, go and buy a better fitting dress shirt before the interview. Skip the men’s jewelry other than a watch and one ring.

  5. Step 5

Select a high quality pair of shoes and make sure they shine. Never wear any kind of sandal or moccasin to an interview. It will look like you just rolled out of bed and threw on your slippers. A good pair of Italian leather shoes that fit you well is an investment that will last for decades. Store them in a covered box when not in use.

  6. Step 6

Walk with confidence. Even when a man is overweight, if he shows a bit of pride and carries his weight well, he looks poised and ready for action. You know you have what it takes to do the job and how much you weight has nothing to do with your ability to succeed in a job.

  7. Step 7

Hold your head high when you walk and be cheerful and enthusiastic. People create positive associations in their minds when they see and communicate with a happy person.

Tips & Warnings
  • Shave and avoid wearing a moustache or beard.
  • Iron your clothes as needed.
  • Wear a pair of dark socks.
  • Don’t wear flat heels if you are very tall.
  • Don’t look sloppy.
  • Don’t wear jewelry except your watch.
  • Don't wear aftershave or cologne
