A good courier service offers a wide range of services. These can include small package delivery, messenger services and court filing services. Some couriers are referred to as legal couriers, who specialize in court filings, deliveries from or to law offices and, in some cases, act as process servers. Couriers' fees are usually either a flat rate per delivery, or a rate based on miles traveled. Reliable transportation, commercial license plate and commercial auto insurance coverage are required. Rush services should be billed at a higher rate than normal delivery deadlines.Preparation of a business plan along with financial statements, although not technically required, is highly advisable. You may know the details of how you will do business, but putting a business plan on paper will often bring up topics you had not already considered.

How to Open a Courier Service

  1. Step 1

Begin drafting your formal business plan. A business plan that doesn’t include financial statements is nearly essential in order to grasp potential deficiencies. You should thoroughly research your competitors. Analyze the market for your courier service through ratio calculations. Set a fee schedule based on flat and mileage rates as well as establishing charges for waiting time.

  2. Step 2

Obtain a business license and a home occupation permit, if you are working out of your home. You will almost always need to pay a fee for your business license.

  3. Step 3

Take a test for a commercial driver’s license at the motor vehicles department. After passing the test, purchase a commercial license plate. Most states also require proof of procurement of commercial auto insurance.

  4. Step 4

Promote your business using the techniques that you included in your business plan. It can be difficult getting businesses to hire you at first. You may want to offer substantial introductory discounts for services or to break into the courier business.

  5. Step 5

Create an advertising program for your business. Design a comprehensive advertising campaign by placing ads in online and yellow page directories, if your budget permits.
