Key West is an island in the southernmost part of Florida. A popular stop for cruise ships, the area is also popular because of its close connection to water, making it a great destination for those wishing to explore private beaches, cultural attractions (such as Hemingway’s former home) and historical landmarks. Hotel stays in Key West can prove to be incredibly expensive, which is why many visitors prefer to look into house rentals as an alternative.

From Quick Guide: Affordable Vacation Ideas
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Decide on a budget beforehand. What is affordable to you could be expensive to others, so it’s important that you have a price range in mind before you start looking. Also, make a list of must-have features and another one listing things you can do without. For example, houses without a pool or away from the waterfront should be cheaper.

  2. Step 2

Stay away from the Old Town area, which has only luxury, top-of-the-line houses. Waterfront houses are also a lot more expensive, but moving just a couple of blocks inland will result in a more affordable rental.

  3. Step 3

Look in Craigslist for private rentals. This can be a great way to avoid fees and key deposits and a good solution if you are looking for something at the last minute. Most houses offered in Craigslist are actually sublets from somebody who will be temporarily away, which usually means the person is willing to negotiate the price (see Resources below).

  4. Step 4

Let a realtor do the walking for you. Rather than contacting a general real estate office, look for companies specializing in vacation homes, as they will have a better insight into what’s available and should be able to find something in your price range. As an example, RentKeyWest, one of the top rental companies in the area, offers weekly, monthly and daily rentals, and allow you to choose what features you want in the house you rent, such as a pool, direct access to the water or even your own private tennis court (see Resources below).

  5. Step 5

Consider planning your vacation to coincide with the low season (from August to December 23). Even the more expensive houses become affordable once the big crowds depart the area and realtors are in need of more business.

  6. Step 6

Look into houseboats. Many are permanently docked into the Key Largo marina and provide a great budget alternative. They are usually available from traditional real estate offices, as well as in Craigslist.

Tips & Warnings
  • Hurricane season hits the area between August and October, so make sure you plan your trip accordingly.
  • Be very careful about “signing” an agreement over the phone or through the Internet. Always ask for details, references and photos of the house.
