A carpet cleaning business can be profitable if started in an effective manner. Follow these steps to effectively open a carpet cleaning business.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Car or truck to haul equipment.
  • Carpet cleaning equipment.
  1. Step 1

Do your research. The carpet cleaning business has many niches. Find the niche that best fits your geographical area and you. Make sure the area you will be marketing to is not overrun with competition.

  2. Step 2

Create a business identity. Choose a name that will make your business recognizable as a carpet cleaning business. Also purchase uniforms with the business's name and worker's name on the front of the shirt. This will give your business a professional look.

  3. Step 3

Obtain a business license. Having a license not only creates a better image of a new company by showing credibility but it is required to get insurance. You may also want to register your business's name at this time.

  4. Step 4

Purchase business insurance. Going into people's homes or businesses involves risks of doing damage to personal property, so it is best to have insurance from the beginning. Shop around to different insurance agencies to get the best deal.

  5. Step 5

Line out the equipment and material you need for the job. While it is best to buy the best cleaning equipment possible, it can prove difficult on a small budget. To avoid a high startup cost you can rent machinery by the day. Just make sure to have a whole day's worth of work ahead of you when you rent. After a couple of weeks you should have enough profit to purchase or start leasing your own equipment.

  6. Step 6

Get the word out about your new carpet cleaning business. Start off with a special deal, like cleaning one room for a small cost. This will get your business name out there and create new customers. Advertise through fliers, post cards, business cards, and by putting a logo on your personal car.

  7. Step 7

Keep a schedule of appointments and try to have full days when working. Line out your appointments to get the most out of your gas mileage. When doing work in a area out of your regular district you may need to add to the total cost of the project to cover gas costs.

Tips & Warnings
  • Keep very detailed records of expenses of the business to avoid paying too much taxes.
  • Operating a carpet cleaning business without warning has major risks. Not getting business insurance to avoid costs should not be done in this line of work.
