How to Rent a Computer Without a Credit Check
Sometimes it seems as though it's impossible to rent a computer if you have bad credit. Fortunately, there are a few companies out there which allow consumers with poor credit or no credit to rent personal computers and laptops. They are known as rent-to-own companies and they allow consumers who don’t qualify for credit a chance to purchase big ticket items such as computers, furniture and televisions. Unlike lay-away plans where customers pay a portion of the purchase price every week and take possession of the item only after it has been fully paid, rent-to-own stores allow customers to walk out of the store the same day with their purchase. Rent-to-own stores are a boon to college students, young families and others with poor credit who need a computer now. It’s very easy to qualify for credit at a rent-to-own store; all you need is to provide proof of residence and income.

1
Locate a local rent-to-own store online or in the yellow pages. It’s a good idea to call the store before going there to make sure they offer computers.
-
2
Choose the computer that you wish to rent. Often rent-to-own stores offer both new and used computers. If you plan on only renting the computer for a limited amount of time, you can save money by renting a used one. If you plan on eventually buying the computer, you might as well pay a little extra and get a brand new computer.

3
Fill out the purchase agreement. Be prepared to provide your name, address, phone number, social security number, date of birth, information regarding your employment history, information on any automobiles that you own, the amount of your monthly rent or mortgage payment, and length of residency.
-
4
Provide 5 references; at least 2 of the references should be family members. Make sure to bring current contact information on all of your references, because the company will call each one. It’s always a good idea to let your references know beforehand so they won’t be surprised by the call.
-
5
Show your proof of income. The pay stub will need to be current and should show your name and the name and address of your employer.
-
6
Set up your payment schedule. Most rent-to-own companies offer flexible payment options allowing you to pay weekly, bi-weekly or monthly.
-
7
Pay your first payment. Many companies will take cash, checks, or debit cards. Be aware that some companies don’t accept personal checks.
-
8
Take your computer home or set up a time to have it delivered. If you choose to have it delivered, most companies will set up the computer up for you.

Tips & Warnings
Rent-to-own companies offer excellent service plans. These plans include free repairs and service calls, free loaners and free replacement if they are unable to fix your item.
Some rent-to-own companies have websites where you can shop for merchandise and begin the application process at home.
If a rent-to-own company does not have the brand of computer you want, most will order it for you if you are willing to wait a few days.
Rent-to-own companies charge higher prices than regular stores and their finance charges are usually the highest allowable by state law. Be aware that you will end up paying double or triple the normal price for a computer.
Rent-to-own companies are sticklers about paying on time. If you are going to be late with a payment, it’s a good idea to call them immediately. Most companies will work with you, especially if you have a history of making your payments on time. If you are late and don’t contact them, someone will come to take your computer away.
