How to Customize the Toolbars in Microsoft Word 2003

Word processors offer many useful options with regards to the aspect of toolbar customization. Since all users have different levels of skills when it comes to using such software, not everybody is going to need all of the tools in the toolbar set. This is why the toolbars are able to be easily customized and tailored to the user's preferences.

Instructions

      Open the toolbar customization menu. Scroll to “Tools” and then click on “Customize.”

      Choose the toolbars that you wish to be viewed. A toolbar customization properties menu will open. In the drop-down list of toolbars to the left, you can check or uncheck toolbars that you wish to view on the toolbar menu.

      Set customization options. Click on the “Options” tab to enter this menu. Under the “Personalized Menus and Options” field, you can specify the viewing options of the toolbars by checking or unchecking the corresponding boxes. Under the “Other” field you can determine the icon size, whether tips are included in the menus and how the font in the font toolbar is displayed by checking the boxes next to each option.

      Implement the toolbar changes. Click on the “Okay” button and the options menu will close and save all changes.

Tips & Warnings

  • This feature is very useful for removing toolbars that you do not often use from cluttering the toolbar menu.

  • Removing a toolbar from the customization menu will remove it from view above the command bar. You can easily add the toolbar back by following the above steps and checking the corresponding toolbar option in the customization menu.
