How to Become a Medical Lab Technician

Medical laboratory technicians work in a laboratory environment completing various clinical tests such as blood and tissue. They are an integral part of the diagnostic team because they provide important test results necessary to diagnosing and treating diseases and infections. Lab techs may also perform drug tests and hormone panels.

Instructions

1. Complete the necessary training program. Typically this will be a one-year certification program or a two-year associate's program. The qualifications range from state to state, but you should at least complete a certification program in the field to ensure the most job opportunities.

2. Obtain national certification. After you have received your training, it is recommended you pass the national certification exam offered by either The American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or The American Medical Technologist (AMT). This will earn you the title Certified Medical Laboratory Technician and afford you even more career options.

3. Specialize. There are many specialties from hematology and immunology to virology and even chemistry. Picking a specialty may help when you are ready to enter the work force by allowing you to gain a tremendous amount of experience in that specific area.

4. Get comfortable with the idea of working with blood as well as other bodily fluids. This is the main function of the job, so you will need to be relaxed handling biohazardous materials.

5. Possess excellent analytical skills. Medical laboratory technicians need to be able to analyze many different types of tests as well as results to ensure tests have been completed properly.
