How to Remove a Motherboard From a PC

It's not always necessary to replace a computer, if you can upgrade the components inside. Replacing an antiquated motherboard with a new one will give you a clean slate to build upon when you're upgrading your computer.

Instructions

    • 1

Disconnect the power and open the computer case. Typically, there are a series of screws on the case that must be removed. Ground yourself using an antistatic wrist strap to avoid damaging components. Also ground the chassis of the computer to the same ground.

    • 2

Detach the wiring leads and plugs connected to the motherboard. Catalog each one as you go along by writing down what it was connected to and tagging the wires with an identifying mark. This will save you time and avoid confusion when you install a new motherboard.

    • 3

Check for obstructions that might interfere with removing the motherboard, such as cables attached to adapter cards and other physical obstructions.

    • 4

Remove adapter cards and memory from the motherboard. Place them carefully in anti-static packaging to prevent damage if you plan on reusing them. Different types of cards have different attachment methods, so check carefully before you try to force them out. Remove the processor from the motherboard--most CPUs use a ZIF (zero insertion force) mechanism. Look for the latch next to the CPU and simply release it. The CPU will come out easily.

    • 5

Remove the hardware that is securing the motherboard to the chassis of the case. Usually, you'll find a series of machine screws doing the job. Take them out carefully, being sure not to scratch the surface of the motherboard. Remove the motherboard now. In most cases, it will lift straight out, but it may be necessary to tilt it slightly to work past obstructions.

Tips & Warnings

  • Avoid static charges. Even a small one can damage electronic components.
