How to Set the Table Auto Fit in Microsoft Word 2003

Of the many great features that advanced word processors like Microsoft Word 2003 offer is that of inter-compatibility between other Microsoft programs. Users do not have to simply rely upon the table draw tool any longer. They can now import Excel tables and edit them to easily fit into the interface of their document simply by using the table auto fit feature.

Instructions

    • 1

Create a table. Use the table drawing tool to create the desired table, or import an already created table from Excel.

    • 2

Open the Table Auto Fit menu. Scroll to “Table” and then click on “AutoFit.”

    • 3

Set table to auto fit options. You can set the table to do three different things under the table auto fit menu. Click “AutoFit to Contents” to allow the table to shape around the existing text and or images; click “Autofit to Window” to make the table fit into a shape that is viewable in the current window; click “Fixed Column Width” to set the table column width the size of the current table column, for all new columns created.

    • 4

Set the table row and column options. You can set two different options under the same menu for columns and rows in your table: Click “Distribute Rows Evenly” to make sure that all of the rows that are created have even distribution. Click “Distribute Columns Evenly” to make sure that all of the columns that are created have even distribution inside of the table.

Tips & Warnings

  • Table auto fit is great for making evenly sized tables, columns and rows in a snap.

  • Changing table attributes using the auto fit feature on tables that you import may change or remove some of the formulas inside of said tables, depending upon which options you select.
