Here's how to ride in an elevator with strangers.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

    Make an entrance.

Decisively enter the elevator so people hold the door and make room for you. Don't appear half-hearted or the people riding in the elevator will think you are waiting for the next elevator car.

  2. Step 2

    Push some buttons.

Push the button for your floor as soon as you get in, or tell the person nearest to the buttons what your floor you'd like to go to. They'll push it the button for you.

  3. Step 3

    Get some space.

Move to an area where you have a couple feet of space around you on all sides. Don't stand too close to anyone or they'll feel crowded.

  4. Step 4

    Face the door.

Standard elevator practice is to stand facing the door with your eyes either up or down, not directly looking at any other passengers.

  5. Step 5

    Keep your chit-chat brief.

People riding elevators don't always like to hear life stories, if they even want to talk at all. So keep your elevator chatter brief, even if you are talking to a friend.
