Step 1
Turn the light off. If it's a lamp or portable light fixture, turn the light off and then unplug it.
-
Step 2
Remove the old light bulb. If the light bulb is hot, wait until it cools, or use a lightweight cotton towel to protect your hands from the heat.
-
Step 3
Grasp the light bulb firmly and turn it counter-clockwise.
-
Step 4
Place the used light bulb in a safe location where it won't roll, break, or shatter.
-
Step 5
Grasp the new bulb and insert it into the light fixture with a clockwise motion. In some light fixtures, you may need to grasp the metal socket with your other hand in order to provide resistance so the light bulb can screw into the socket.
-
Step 6
When the bulb is securely in place, turn the light back on. Make sure the light bulb burns brightly. If it flickers, or looks dim, it might not be screwed in all the way. Screw in the light bulb a little more. If it still doesn't burn well, replace the light bulb or light fixture.
