How to Write A Resume

Whether you are new to the working world or just looking for a new career, a resume is the greatest tool a new job hunter can have.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

The structure of a resume should be simple and always include the following headings in bold:
    Objective
    Education
    Work History
    Awards and Recognition
    References

  2. Step 2

Resume objectives should be short, clear and to the point. An example would be "Copy-editing professional looking to join an established advertising firm."

  3. Step 3

Education listed on a resume should be clearly stated and include every school attended, G.P.A, degree obtained and years attended.

  4. Step 4

List all relevant work experience, meaning, list only the jobs that count as professional or long-term positions. A two-week stint as a pizza delivery person should not be mentioned.

  5. Step 5

Add awards and recognition. This includes all professional organizations including Kiwanis, Lyons and Optimist Clubs. You can also mention any relevant college organizations including fraternities and sororities.

  6. Step 6

References on a resume should include at least three non-relatives who can account for your credibility and work experience.

Tips & Warnings
  • Check All Spelling! You would be surprised how many wannabe-executives turn in resumes with spelling mistakes. Double check every word and don't always count on spell check to fix every mistake. Sometimes the wrong word for the sentence is spelled correctly. Spell check will not catch that.
  • When listing references, job titles, degrees, certificates and time periods, be 100 percent honest. It may seem easy to "shine up" your resume by adding an extra year onto a two year job stint, or dropping the word "assistant" from an assistant management position, but be ill-advised. Employers aren't stupid and most aren't lazy. They will fact-check your information.
