How to Make a Tree House

There is nothing like a tree house when it comes to a secret hide-a-way for kids. Nestled amongst the trees, a tree house can be a haven where prying adult eyes are not allowed. Children can spend long summer afternoons here reading or dreaming of far-a-way places. Building a crude tree house doesn't have to be difficult, and it will bring hours of joy to the child in your life.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a large branching tree. The tree should have at least two branches that are at approximately the same height. Look for branches that are perpendicular to the ground and remain fairly level. Test the branches for strength to make sure they will hold the weight of a tree house safely. Avoid dead or dying limbs that may deteriorate over time.

    • 2

Create the base of the tree house by nailing a 2 by 4 piece of lumber across the two branches near the trunk of the tree and another at the point where the tree house will end. Adjust the one near the trunk to the appropriate height so that a board run from front to back is level. Secure pieces of lumber from front to back to stabilize.

    • 3

Create a frame for the tree house by running four 2 by 4 pieces of lumber from the side of the supporting branches to upper branches and secure in place by nailing. Connect the vertical pieces of lumber with the same size piece of lumber at each corner to provide a sturdy base for constructing walls.

    • 4

Complete the walls and back of the tree house by nailing scrap lumber to the 2 by 4 base. Leave a open space next to the trunk of the tree to serve as a door. Close in the front of the tree house with scrap lumber attaching it to the pieces of lumber. Close the front in completely or leave an open section for viewing the outside world.

    • 5

Nail boards right to the trunk of the tree for a simple ladder that appeals to children.

    • 6

Test the tree house for safety before allowing children to play in the house. Use caution with very young children.

Tips & Warnings

  • Build a cabin between the trees for young children.

  • Always use caution when allowing small children to play in tree houses. Monitor their activity closely.
