1
Measure the window and notice if it opens by sliding up or to the side. Make sure there is an electrical outlet near the window and measure the distance from the window sill to the outlet. Write down the measurements of the window, the distance between the plug and window sill, and the voltage of the electrical outlet.

Go to the store and select a window air conditioner suitable for the type of window you have (opens by sliding up or to the side). Use the measurements you took to make sure the unit will fit in the window you intend to use it in. Check the dimension of the cord to ensure it will reach the outlet or purchase a longer cord of equal durability to replace the original cord (ask a sales associate for assistance if needed).

3
Remove the screen from the window. Follow the instructions that come with the unit carefully. Place the bracing material as directed in the instructions, ensuring they are secure and will hold the unit. Place the air conditioner in the window.

4
Use material provided with the unit to block off the portion of the window not filled with the unit or wood. Plug the unit into the electrical outlet and enjoy the cool air.
