Drawing wizards is important for any artist who wants to get into the sci-fi illustration field. First, the artist needs to be able to draw humans realistically. The artist also needs to be able to make informed choices on the look of the wizard to make it look fresh and appealing. This takes practice, but these tips will help you get started.

Instructions

    • 1
      Example 1

Draw your wizard's body. A simple sketch of the body will do wonders to make the clothing look believable. Determine if you want a muscular wizard, like in Example 1, or a thinner type magic user. This will make a big difference in how the wizard's robes will fit and how the wizard is perceived overall.

    • 2
      Example 2

Draw the robes onto the framework of the body. Remember to make sleeves appear to go around the wrists of the wizard. This can be done by drawing a foreshortened circle around the wrist and connecting it to the sleeve of the garment. Accessories also make the wizard. Notice how the one in Example 2 has a pouch for magic dust. This is simply drawn by using two overlapping ovals and adding a line to indicate a wrinkle.

    • 3
      Example 3

Consider giving your wizard unusual clothing, if you find robes too plain. A female wizard can be given a flouncy skirt and cape, as shown in Example 3. Notice how the cape can be drawn as a triangle hanging from the shoulders. Remember to draw wrinkles in the cape to keep it from looking stiff.

    • 4
      Example 4

Give your wizard a good spell. In Example 4, the wizard isn't just standing there, he's casting a spell. Spells can be drawn as bursts of clouds, lightning, or fire, for example. This spell was drawn by darkening the area around the wizard's hand and adding dashes of lines for movement.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make sure to give your magic user a look of concentration for a more realistic feel.

  • Pointy wizards hats are a bit cliche and obvious and should used with careful consideration.
