The sheet bend is a handy knot for boaters to learn. This knot is useful for tying together two ropes of differing diameters. Ropes with a great difference of size will not slip when the sheet bend is correctly tied. The sheet bend has a long history and dates back to the days when sailing vessels ruled the seas. Sailors would "bend" the "sheets" that attached to the sails. Pay attention to the illustrations and you will be tying sheet bends in no time.

Grasp the larger line and form a small loop in the tag end of the line. Take the smaller diameter line and run up through the loop, going from bottom to top.

Run the small diameter line around the larger loop. Make sure the tag end of the smaller line winds up behind the standing end of the smaller line, as the Illustration in Step 2 demonstrates.

Grab the tag end of the smaller line and run it up and under the standing end of the smaller line. This forms a half hitch of sorts around the loop of the larger line. Pull on both ends of the smaller line until the knot tightens.

  4. Step 4

    Illustration Step 4

Take the tag end of the smaller line and tie a half hitch after the line leaves the larger line loop. Snug this hitch down tightly. To make this hitch totally secure, use the twine to tie together both ends of the smaller line after the last half hitch was tied.
