A collage can be a work of art. When creating one, you can easily say things without even speaking. Collages are very simple and easy to make. They can be great additions to dorm rooms, school projects or even used to spruce up plain notebooks. All you need to create a decent collage is paper, glue, scissors, and some neat pictures that "explain" what your collage is trying to say.

Things You'll Need:

  • Old Magazines
  • Poster
  • Glue Stick
  • Scissors
  1. Step 1

Get an idea of what your collage is going to be about. Some examples are world history, all about you, your friends, or a walk down memory lane. Write down your topic and begin brainstorming subtopics.

  2. Step 2

Once you've jotted down your ideas, use your scissors to cut out pictures, words and quotes from magazines that match your topic or subtopic. You may need more than one old magazine because you will want to cover the entire poster. No white should show.

  3. Step 3

Lay out your images on your poster the way that you would like them to be glued. It's perfectly fine for some images to overlap. You can make your pictures crooked, upside down, slanted, or sideways. You can even use your scissors to cut jagged borders around your images. Get creative. Double check to make sure your collage says what you want it to say.

  4. Step 4

Glue your arranged pieces on the poster. A glue stick works best because magazine paper is very thin. Regular glue would cause bumps under the cutouts causing your collage to look rough.

  5. Step 5

Add glitter, stickers, rhinestones, and scrapbook paper cutouts to give it a funky touch and to cover up any white spots that may be showing. Let it dry. Frame it or tack it to the wall!

Tips & Warnings
  • Use vintage magazines for a cool, more original look.
  • Don't try to emulate collages that you've seen. Go for your own idea of what a collage should be.
