In addition to being the oldest breed of dog in the United States the Chihuahua is also the smallest breed of dog in the world. The Chihuahua's small size makes it the ideal pet for dog lovers that live in small homes or apartments without yards. The Chihuahua is a happy dog and is very loyal. Due to the Chihuahua's small stature owners need to take some extra precautions when caring for their pet.

Instructions
  1. Step 1

Keep an extra careful eye on your chihuahua when there is a larger dog in the area. Chihuahua's like other dogs and love playing with them, but larger dogs don't always understand that the tiny chihuahua is delicate and can't join in the rougher games. Separate the dogs when you notice that the games are starting to become too rough.

  2. Step 2

Small children and small dogs don't always go together. Young children have a tendency to think that because of the chihuahua's diminutive stature that it can be treated like a stuffed animal. The kids pick up the dog and carry it all over the place and sometimes drop the dog, which can lead to injury. Some chihuahuas learn to defend themselves and develop a habit of biting. Most chihuahua owners try to keep any visiting children and their pet in separate areas of the house.

  3. Step 3

Make sure your veterinarian has experience with small dogs. Not only do chihuahuas have some health concerns that are unique to small dogs, they also require downsized tools that your veterinarian won't have if all they ever see are large breeds.

  4. Step 4

Feed your chihuahua a responsible diet. One of the most common health problems chihuahuas suffer from is obesity. While this little dog is active by nature, living in a small home can sometimes make it lazy and exercise less. If you notice that your little dog is starting to pack on the pounds, you will have to reduce the amount it is eating.

  5. Step 5

Exercise your chihuahua. Many dog owners assume that because their dog is small it doesn't need to be exercised. The reality is that daily walks will help prevent your chihuahua from becoming overweight, keep their joints supple and lowering the risk of respiratory and cardiovascular problems.

  6. Step 6

Set aside some time each day to spend with your chihuahua. Chihuahuas lover their owners and need to feel that the love is returned. Simply spending some time will help prevent your chihuahua from becoming depressed or anxious.

  7. Step 7

Pay attention to your dog's attitude. When a happy, active dog starts to act lazy and listless it can be a sign that something isn't right.
