How to Have a Healthy Colon

Too often, we only take care of our colon when it gives us trouble. And in a lot of cases, those problems involve maladies that are life-threatening. The colon is the organ that helps dispose of waste. It is reasonably durable, but if it is overlooked, it can make you feel fatigued, cause constipation and ultimately be the forerunner of several types of cancer. Keeping your colon healthy is essential to your well-being. Here are some ways to keep your colon healthy.

Instructions

Be sure that what you eat is good for your colon. Most people do not have enough fiber in their diets, so their colon does not operate as well as it should. If you're in that category, the remedy is to eat more fruit, green and leafy vegetables, and lots of things like broccoli and high-fiber cereals. Most doctors recommend that you eat 5 or more servings of such high-fiber foods each day. In addition, you should ingest a moderate amount of meat, as well as pasteurized milk, and most processed foods should be eliminated from your diet.

Drink a lot of water each day, because a lack of it will ordinarily result in constipation, which causes blockage of waste removal. You can substitute fruit juices for the 8 to 10 glasses of water you should drink every day, because they tend to reduce cholesterol levels. You can make any concoction by using a blender. Many tasty drinks can be made from fruits and vegetables like apples, tomatoes, cucumbers, carrots and celery, and they are all beneficial for keeping your colon healthy.

    • 3

Avoid weight gain, a condition that is detrimental to good colonic health, by exercising regularly. In fact, a minimum of 30 minutes of exercise three times each week is good for every organ in your body, including your colon.

    • 4

Take a multivitamin every day to make up for nutrients you may be missing in your diet. It is commonly believed that colorectal cancer can avoided with regular doses of folic acid and vitamin D.

    • 5

Have a colon cancer test if you're 50 or older. One of the most effective tests is called a colonoscopy, which sends a picture of your colon to a monitor. It is viewed by your doctor, who will take samples of suspicious tissue and can also remove pre-cancerous polyps from your colon.
