How to Recognize and Treat Atopy in Canines

Many dog owners become concerned when their canine begins itching excessively. This can be a symptom of atopy, which is a very common condition in dogs, and occurs when your canine is allergic to something in the air. Because this condition can cause discomfort to your dog, it's important recognize and treat atopy in canines.

1. Evaluate your dog’s symptoms. Dogs that experience this condition may shake their head, chew at paws and scratch ears excessively. They appear to never find relief while itching. Write your dog’s symptoms down to discuss with his doctor.

2. Schedule an exam with your vet. Your vet should examine your dog’s skin for evidence of itching. Although atopy is very common, some dogs experience itching because of fleas or mites. You can also request a blood test to discover the exact cause of your canine’s allergy.

3. Create a treatment plan with your dog’s doctor. Request antihistamines to relieve your dog’s symptoms. If your dog has an infection because of the excessive itching, an antibiotic may be needed.

4. Consider giving your canine a fatty acid supplement. Dogs that experience allergies may find relief when taking a fatty acid supplement. This can be added daily to your canine’s food. Always get a recommendation for the proper dosage, and never give your dog a supplement without asking the vet first.

5. Give your dog monthly exams to determine future problems. Once your dog’s skin condition gets better, it’s important to give monthly exams. Have someone hold your dog while you take a look head to toe. Look for signs of itchiness or suspicious lumps or masses.
