How to Solving Systems Linear Equations

Linear systems of equations are sets of two or more equations with a common solution set. This can most commonly be seen graphically when lines of the equations share a common point on the graph. Linear systems can have two or more variables and can be solved using the substitution or elimination method. The substitution method is the most common and will be described in this tutorial.

Instructions

    • 1

Solve your equations so the variables are in the same order.

    • 2

Solve one of your equations for your chosen variable. You can choose either variable.

    • 3

Substitute the solved equation into the other equation and solve. This will give you the answer to one of your variables.

    • 4

Substitute the solved variable into either of the original equations to solve for your remaining variable.

    • 5

Check your answers by substituting the answers into both equations.

Tips & Warnings

  • Equations can be solved for either variable. It helps to be consistent through your problems.

  • If your answers do not check out, repeat the above steps. The solution set should be correct for both linear equations.
