With a little common sense, you make your toaster a much safer appliance to use.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Plug the toaster in an outlet far away from the sink, or any area where liquids will be poured and served.

  2. Step 2

Never stick metal utensils, like a fork into the toaster whether it's unplugged or not. It's often difficult to tell if a toaster is plugged in because of the general confusion of kitchen outlets. Be safe and never stick a metal fork or knife in the toaster because you could get severely shocked by the AC coils in the toaster.

  3. Step 3

Unplug the toaster when it's not in use. Don't use power strips or extension cords to power your toaster.

  4. Step 4

If the toaster catches on fire, don't pour water on it. This could electrocute you. Unplug the toaster. Then smother the fire with a pot lid, backing soda, or a kitchen fire extinguisher.

on 9/16/2008 You just saved a lot of lives specially since I'm about to buy one and I haven't owned one for years. It's like not putting a radio in the bath tub, some people still have to be told. Thanks!
