How to Become a Vet Tech Researcher in Illinois
A vet tech researcher is a veterinary technician who has decided to specialize in the field of veterinary research as opposed to working clinically in the care of animals. Vet tech researchers work in universities, zoos or other animal research centers. Veterinary technicians have to be licensed in order to practice. In Illinois, licensed vet techs are called Certified Veterinary Technicians (CVTs).

Apply to a reputable veterinary technician program. The first step to becoming a vet tech researcher is to become a vet tech. Vet tech programs are available at community colleges and allied health colleges. Vet tech programs confer a certificate, diploma or associate's degree. Most vet tech programs take 2 years, after which the student receives an associate's degree.

Seek out internships. It is critical to have a vet tech internship or externship that will provide both laboratory and clinical experience. All accredited vet tech programs should have this as part of the curriculum. There are also internship programs of up to 12 months that provide the necessary practical training either post-graduation or for students who have already completed their second year of training (see Resources below).

Get certified. In order to practice as a vet tech in the state of Illinois, a vet tech needs to be certified as a CVT. The certification process is regulated by the Division of Professional Regulation of the Illinois Department of Professional and Financial Regulation (see Resources below).

Explore national certification. Another certification route is taking the National Veterinary Technology Board Examinations. This allows you to apply for licensing in any state.

Seek out opportunities in research. Following veterinary technology education and after passing the boards, vet techs interested in becoming vet tech researchers should get jobs in research facilities at universities, zoos or other animal research institutions.
