How to Transplant Grapes

Transplanting grapes is a very risky procedure. The younger the grape vine the better. A 3- or 4-year old grape vine will not suffer the same shock a hundred year old grape vine will suffer. Grapes can be successfully transplanted, but it will require great care and patience.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

    Prune back the grape vine to be transplanted to two or three strong vines.

  2. Step 2

    Position the shovel one foot away from the base of the grape vine. Dig a hole at least one foot deep in a circular pattern around the grapevine.

  3. Step 3

    Angle the shovel to dig the bottom of the root ball out.

  4. Step 4

    Lift the root ball of the grape vine out of the soil.

  5. Step 5

    Prepare the soil of the grape vines new location by digging a hole and preparing the soil with fertilizer.

  6. Step 6

    Place the grape vine into its new location. Cover with the prepared soil. Water thoroughly.

Tips & Warnings
  • It is best to transplant grapes right before they go dormant in the fall.
  • Older grape vines may not survive the shock of being transplanted.
