Blood feathers are feathers which are still growing. New feathers are fed by a blood supply during this stage. If they break, it can quickly become a life or death situation for your pet bird. Thankfully, it is quite simple and 100% effective to remove the blood feather.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Hemostats or Needle Nose Pliers
  • Towel
  1. Step 1

Wrap bird gently but securely in a towel, leaving the affected wing exposed. Be certain the bird's head is covered. Darkness has a sort of sedative effect on birds. Have your helper hold the bird, if you have one.

  2. Step 2

Using the hemostats or needle nose pliers, grasp the broken feather at the base near the bird's skin.(careful not to grasp skin!)

  3. Step 3

Place other hand on the bird's skin at the base to offer support and prevent discomfort.

  4. Step 4

With a firm and fluid movement, pull the blood feather out. Do not yank or jerk it. Just firmly pull until it comes out.

  5. Step 5

The bleeding will now stop and the bird can be placed back in their cage.

  6. Step 6

Cover the cage if the bird seems stressed.

  7. Step 7

If there was significant blood lose, you should seek a vet exam right away.
