In prayer

Prayer groups create an atmosphere where people can be completely honest with themselves and others and ask a higher power for what they feel they need or desire. The topic of a prayer group can be focused or specific, for example related to cancer, mental illness, domestic violence, or general family life, or it can much more broad, such as finding and understanding a higher power. A prayer group should be a comfortable place that does not judge and does not ask for money. There are many places to find prayer groups and these are some of the most common suggestions. Enjoy and find peace in a prayer group.

Instructions

    • 1

Contact the church you attend, or have attended in the past. It is best to connect with a church that you are comfortable with. Either call or go into the church to speak with the clergy or the office staff and ask about current prayer groups. Many churches now have websites and you can easily send an email asking for more information about prayer groups and meeting times.

Get in touch with a local church that is close to you so that you will be more likely meet people in your area and build a support base. This works well if you do not already belong to or attend a church. Contact the church clergy or office staff and inquire about current prayer groups and meeting times.

Do an Internet search for online prayer groups. There are some very general groups that pray for many different situations, or you can search for a particular type of prayer group that is specific to illness, situation or need. Generally speaking, no money is required to sign up for an online prayer group.

Call a support group that focuses on or is relative to your situation and ask about referrals to a prayer group. If they cannot refer you, you can ask that a notice be posted recruiting people for a prayer group. Search for support groups in the yellow pages, online, or by asking friends and family for referrals. If you are experiencing illness, contact the clinic or hospital from which you receive care and ask for a referral or support group information. Many hospitals and clinics keep information on hand for patients and in this information you might find a resource for prayer groups.

Tips & Warnings

  • Allow time to adjust to the prayer group setting and remember you should never feel obligated to give money or resources to any group.

  • If it seems necessary or logical, take a partner with you to the prayer group as a safety measure and also for extra emotional support.
