How to Care for Bushes and Saplings During Drought

Don't let your plants suffer during times when lack of rain threatens to dry them up. Soaker hoses are nice but in the cases where you need to care for individual bushes, saplings and other plants that are a fair distance from one another, that could just equal water waste.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Empty milk jugs
  1. Step 1

    Collect empty plastic milk jugs.

  2. Step 2

    Clean jugs thoroughly!

  3. Step 3

Poke holes in 1 or 2 sides of each jug about an inch from the bottom. I like to use a nail that I've held over the stove to heat (using a pair of pliers to hold the nail). This melts the hole nicely when touched to your jug.

  4. Step 4

Take your jugs outside and fill them with a hose.

  5. Step 5

Place the jug near the base of the plant you wish to be watered.

  6. Step 6

    Refill jugs as needed.

on 9/18/2008 We used this approach for plants that were too far to reach with hose. Great tip.
