Clean Fabric or Vinyl Convertible Tops

Keeping fabric and vinyl convertible tops clean and looking as good as the rest of the car can be challenging. The key of course is to clean it routinely. Read this article to find out how to clean your fabric or vinyl convertible top.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Soft sponge, cloth or cleaning mitt
  • Mild soap or cleaner of choice
  • Warm water
  1. Step 1

    Wet the car completely.

  2. Step 2

Use a wet cloth to spread the mild soap or cleaner over the top and leave it while you wash the rest of the car.

  3. Step 3

Clean the top using circular strokes and small sections until you’ve cleaned the whole top.

  4. Step 4

If your fabric or vinyl convertible top is really dirty, spray with a mild foam cleaner and leave on top for a few minutes. The auto parts store can recommend a good foam cleaner to you.

  5. Step 5

Thoroughly rinse the car ensuring the soap is completely gone.

  6. Step 6

Use a dry soft cloth and dry the car. Spray a fabric or vinyl convertible top protectant on the car’s top. When possible, leave car in direct sunlight to allow the top to dry completely.

Tips & Warnings
  • Never put the top down when it is wet. This causes smudges and black marks to appear.
  • If cleaner gets on the car finish, wash off immediately to prevent streaking.
  • If the top needs in-depth cleaning with a mild brush and cleaner, protect the car’s finish by covering it with a plastic sheet.
  • High pressure car washes may cause water to enter the inside of your car so be careful using automatic car washers.
