This article will teach you how to make an herbal tincture that will help cure the flu, the common cold, and ward off viruses.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Dried Elderberries
  • Dried Echinacea
  • Dried Horehound
  • Dried Mullen
  • Dried Peppermint
  • Green Tea
  • Bottle of inexpensive Vodka
  1. Step 1

Buy the required herbs at your local health food store, or purchase them online.

  2. Step 2

Measure out 1 cup of the Elderberries, 1/4 cup of each of the other herbs. Mix them together in a bowl.

  3. Step 3

Place the herbs in a quart jar. Fill the jar to the top with the vodka.

  4. Step 4

Place the jar in a dark cupboard. Once a day take it out and shake it well. Leave it to soak for a month.

  5. Step 5

At the end of the month, strain out the berries and herbs and rebottle the tincture. The alcohol has absorbed all the qualities of the herbs.

  6. Step 6

NOTE: Some herbalists say that if you start your tincture on the new moon and strain it on the full moon, it will be 10-15% stronger than an un-timed tincture.

Tips & Warnings
  • No need to refrigerate, the tincture will keep just about forever.
  • Take 1 tablespoon once a day, five days a week as a preventative.
  • Take 1 tablespoon three to four times a day if you have a cold or the flu.
  • You can mix the tincture with a small amount of warm water to drink.
  • For children, you can make an Elderberry Syrup or Glycerine Extract (see my articles on this) without the alcohol.
  • Be sure to take two days a week off (this is called "pulsing") to ensure effectiveness.
  • Do not use Echinacea if you have Diabetes
  • Do not use for more than eight weeks straight. Take a break every now and then.
  • Check with your doctor before using if you are taking any other medications.
  • Should not be given to children younger than 2 years old without a physician’s approval.
  • Do not use if pregnant - Safety for use in pregnancy has not been established. Some contraindications are thought to exist.
