Osage Orange, or Hedge Apple
Osage Orange, or Hedge Apple

This article will explain an easy way to get rid of spiders and keep your home Green.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Access to an Osage Orange Tree
  • Basket or plastic bag for collecting
  • Flat dish to place them on in the home
  1. Step 1

Spiders in the home can be a very unwanted pest, but if you're like me you don't want to kill them, just deter them from coming into the house, and without using chemicals or sprays.

  2. Step 2

The first thing you need to do is find a source of Hedge Apples. They are the fruit of the Osage Orange tree (Maclura pomifera.) These trees grow in the Midwest and South.

  3. Step 3

Once you've found some, gather the fruit in a basket, and bring them home. They're slightly sticky sometimes, so use a basket or plastic bag to carry them (you don't want to get your clothes or car seats dirty.)

  4. Step 4

When you get home, figure out where the spiders might be coming in (basement, crawl space, etc.) Get a small dish, plastic container, or even plastic bag, and place a Hedge Apple in the area where the spiders enter.

  5. Step 5

If you have enough, put them in each corner of the basement (if you have one), as well as by windows or doors. You can leave them out for several months, or until they dry out and turn completely brown.

  6. Step 6

Hedge Apples last for at least two to three months, depending on the humidity and location. Once they have completely dried out and turned brown, it's time for new ones. You can buy them online if they aren't available locally, see the links below for more info and help. Best of luck!

Tips & Warnings
  • Place a Hedge Apple in each corner of your basement or crawl space.
  • Put one in your bedroom or closet, they smell slightly odd but herbal, in a nice way.
  • Check your Hedge Apples periodically to make sure they haven't gotten damp and started to rot.
  • Do not attempt to eat or feed the Hedge Apple to humans or pets.
  • Be careful while collecting them, those trees have thorns!
