Things You'll Need:
- Mane comb
- Human hair detangler
- Spray bottle of water
- Paper or cloth towel
-
Step 1
The first thing you need to do is get the mane wet. Ideally, you should wash your horse and remove the dirt, but sometimes you don't have that option.
-
Step 2
Using a spray bottle, mist down the horses' mane so it is damp. Squeeze out some of the human hair detangler into your palm. Massage a small amount into the horses' mane, working it in well.
-
Step 3
Using your mane comb, start at the bottom and work your way up. Don't try to force your way down from the top, you can make the tangle worse that way.
-
Step 4
Working slowly, using the end of the comb if necessary, comb the tangles out. You might even need a toothpick to get into the center of some of the worst tangles. Don't rip the hair out, it will come loose if you work with it (most manes are very straight hair.)
-
Step 5
Once the tangle is out, mist again with the water, and blot with some paper towel. You can leave some of the detangler in, but get the bulk of it out.
-
Step 6
Comb the mane all the way down the horses' neck, and you're through! There are commercial products you can use made specifically for horses, but they're more expensive, and human detangler works just as well.

on 9/23/2009 One of my horses always seem to have a tangled mane. I'll have to see if this makes it easier to take care of it.
