I just returned from a three-week cross country road trip with two friends that took us through over 15 states. The trip was a blast; I hope this plan can save you some hassle and help you put together your own road trip. See the country!

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Friends
  • Transporation
  • At least a vague notion of direction
  • Gear
  1. Step 1

Figure out who will be accompanying you on your journey. You are going to be in close quarters with these people for a considerable amount of time, so you better enjoy their company.

  2. Step 2

Find transportation. No car, no trip. Do one of you want to put the miles on your own ride? Are you going to go for the more expensive option and rent?

  3. Step 3

Sketch a vague route for the cross country road trip. This should include a timeline. When will you return? Make sure all agree; you want to avoid fighting on the road.

  4. Step 4

Brainstorm the names of family and friends who live in the direction you are headed. Contact them in advance to see about staying for a night, and plan your road trip around when they can house you.

  5. Step 5

See what materials each traveller can bring to the trip. Start piling the essentials up weeks ahead of time and triple check to make sure nothing is forgotten.

  6. Step 6

Talk about money. Do you have enough saved to fund a long road trip? Do all of you agree to try to save cash by camping out, or eating cheap, or passing on an expensive attraction? These are the types of discussions that can turn nasty on the road when frustrations are high.

  7. Step 7

Keep a log of larger expenses, like gas and lodging. Make sure that not just one of the travelers is being saddled with all the large bills.

  8. Step 8

Fill in all the holes of your schedule close to departure for your cross country road trip. Or, better yet, be spontaneous and wait till you're on the road to figure it out.

Tips & Warnings
  • Buy a GPS device. It's a life saver at 3 in the morning when you're driving down dark back roads looking for the closest motel.
  • Camp! See America's beautiful national parks and save some money skipping hotels.

on 9/18/2008 These are great tips. I'd like to do that someday. I would also recommend sleeping bags or an inflatable bed on such a trip. It makes life so easy for you and the friends/family you'll be dropping in on. ^5 for taking that trip!!!
