It's hard to get started writing sometimes. Here are seasonal memory triggers to get you started writing about your life and family stories. Your children and grandchildren will appreciate that you put these memories on paper.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Many people play jokes on their family and friends on April 1st, better known as April Fool’s Day. Do you remember some of jokes you used? Was anyone in your family a chronic prankster?

  2. Step 2

Everyone knows that April showers brings May flowers. What did your family plant to benefit from April rains? Did your Mother or Grandmother cook something special in the spring that they didn’t fix the rest of the year?

  3. Step 3

Do you remember getting your first library card, your first driver’s license or your first paycheck? When and where was your best spring break?

  4. Step 4

Do you have memories to share about your family’s Palm Sunday and Easter celebrations?

  5. Step 5

Fads: What do you remember about the Rubik’s Cube; Pet Rocks; Hula Hoops, and the current one, Foam Fun? Do you remember the cartoon glasses of the 50s? Do you have Tasmanian Devil or Wily Coyote in your kitchen cabinets?

  6. Step 6

Did you have hometown newspapers or other newspapers you read when you were still at home with your parents? Did your parents read different articles than you did? Did you ever work on your school’s newspaper?

  7. Step 7

Did you ever enter a project in your school’s science fair? Write about your school’s mascot and what it meant to you. What about your most interesting class reunion? Did your parents ever take you to see their old school house?

Tips & Warnings
  • Try to write something, even just a few paragraphs, every day.
  • Get out photographs to help your memory along.
