Write down your goals. What do you want to be able to do? Is a creative block or creative rut keeping you from branching out to a new area of business? Or are you too run down with other things just to keep up with your work? You'll need your creativity to break you out of a rut, so having your goals in hand will certainly help.

Don't make your goal to get out of the rut, either--make your goals for the things you want to do should you not be in a creative rut or holding pattern. That way you'll keep your eye on the prize and not focus about temporary shortcomings.

Do something different. Sometimes, all you need to get through a creative rut is to step out of the everyday routine. Go for a walk on your lunch break or take an afternoon off to read or exercise. You don't have to do something creative or artsy to get your creativity back, but something that gets you out of work mode can easily refresh you.

Get pumped about what you do. Even if you're tired of your job, there's got to be something that attracted you to it. What skills do you use that you're good at? Are there others in your department or industry that you aspire to be like? Read up on industry publications and blogs to see what others in your shoes are doing. For me, talking with and reading about other writers helps a ton sometimes. I find that this often helps me feel rejuvenated because I see people in my shoes that are doing a great job.

Get support. It never hurts to talk to a friend or family member about work. If you are looking for a way out of a creative block, ask them what they think you can do. Sometimes, just having someone to talk with helps.

    Tips & Warnings

    • Post your goals in a prominent place so you see them regularly and focus on them.
