Here's how to buy a classic version of the DeLorean DMC-12, the stainless steel car featured in Back To The Future.

Things You'll Need:

  • An Ebay account
  1. Step 1

    Find a DeLorean for Sale.

Most DeLoreans sold in the US are listed on eBay. If you live in Southern California, you might possibly find a mint condition DeLorean at a speciality car dealership. For the rest of the country, Ebay is the way to shop for a DeLorean DMC-12.

Here's the link you need to see all the DeLoreans at auction on Ebay at any time.

  2. Step 2

Have the cash available to buy the car without financing.

Prices range from $10,000 to $30,000 for a good to mint DeLorean.

  3. Step 3

    Be realistic about your expectations.

Don't get too excited about the quality of the car. Other than the incredible exterior, the interior of the car is plain. The car has fair to poor acceleration, handling and braking. The car doesn't have airbags or modern safety features. The cars are old, because the original DeLorean DMC-12 was only made from 1981-1982.

The DeLorean is available with an automatic or manual transmission.

  4. Step 4

Have a plan for repairing your DeLorean.

Once you buy the DeLorean DMC-12, your on your own for repairs. However, you can order almost every DeLorean part ever made from DeLorean Motor Company. This Texas firm that purchase the entire DeLorean warehouse when foreign production of the car ceased. There are still enough parts to repair all the DeLoreans in existence. In fact, the company even has plans to build new DeLoreans from the spare parts. Use the parts you order from http://www.delorean.com to repair you car. Buy the parts online and take them to the most talented foreign car mechanic in your area. Then say "fix this." Be prepared to pay a lot for the labor of these repairs.

  5. Step 5

    Accept the car's weaknesses.

Why are DeLorean's (especially "good" quality vehicles) still relatively inexpensive? Why are they not widely collected? Most classic car collectors are turned off by the "small car feel" typified by poor quality interior and handling. (Unfortunately, DeLoreans do resemble, in some ways, the low quality Pontiac and Suburu death-traps of the early eighties.)

  6. Step 6

    Use your DeLorean in moderation.

Buy a DeLorean as a show car or a city cruiser. Don't buy a DeLorean for daily use or interstate travel. Remember, if you Delorean ever breaks down, you will have to order the parts from DeLorean Motor Company, wait until they ship to the mechanic, and then wait for the mechanic to fix the car.

  7. Step 7

    Consider buying a "new" DeLorean.

The new DeLorean, in a production run of 20 cars a year and made of 80% vintage DeLorean parts, is extremely limited edition. If you have the patience, consider getting on the waiting list and buying the new DeLorean instead of a mint classic.
