Freelance writers who work from home take the time to write articles for the public, however, it is not easy writing what the public wants to know about. Actually writing is just half the battle, marketing, advertising and driving traffic to their work takes up most of their time. Here is an article to help our friendly freelance writers figure out just what it is the public wants to know about and how popular topics are.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Internet Access
  • Wanting the knowledge of current status of Google searches.
  • Time to spare
  1. Step 1

First step is to take a moment and realizing how Google is expanding and taking on the realization that the internet is ground zero for businesses and freelance writers. Adsense, Adwords, Google Base Beta, and now Google Trends Lab.
Google Trends Lab is a internet based program that is designed by Google to bring important research information right to your finger tips with a simple click. This information is extremely important to those like eBay sellers, ehow writers, hubsters who need to know just what is the now topics, what is it that people are searching for, what do they need. Google Trends allows you to view top searches through their data base from across the world.

  2. Step 2

Second Step is to understand that Google Trend Lab has come out with a program called Zeitgeist (the link is in the resource section of this article), Zeitgeist is broken down in four different sections: "Google Trends", "Trends for Websites", "Insights for Search", and "Hot Trends". Each section gives a deep insight and clear details, this program is not for the light heart-ed; there is much reading to be done, this is like a lesson to yourself on how to market your work and websites. However, "Hot Trends" is a absolute great resource that is easy to read and understand for freelance writers. Lets take a deeper look at these sections of Zeiteist:

  3. Step 3

The first Section would be "Google Trends" - This section allows you to look up search terms and view their popularity, so for example you may want to know what tags are popular about a article you are writing on "Natural Ways to Clean Your Face". You will want to type in only up to five search terms "natural" "cleaning" "face" "soap" "washing", Google Trends will then display for each term the statistics, and show you what terms are the most popular and least popular.

This is also a great way to figure out what products to put up for sale on ebay or on amazon.com, this tool can help you select good products for sale or help you figure out what search terms to use when marketing your items.

  4. Step 4

The second Section would be "Trends for Websites" - I found this section very resourceful, it allows you to type in a website such as "www.eBay.com" and it will pull up the traffic information about eBay for you. It will display for you the peaks, yearly performance, amount of traffic that eBay gets. This is a useful tool when wanting to know where you may want to get affiliations and where you would want to advertise your work and businesses.

  5. Step 5

The third Section would be "Insights for Search" - This section is a far more deeper look into search inquires, this section is more geared for business owners wanting a idea of statistics across the world. This section displays by regions and search topics that are fast rising over time periods.

  6. Step 6

The fourth Section would be "Hot Trends" - This second is a absolutely resourceful tool for any freelance writer, this section allows you to see the most popular searches performed on Google. This allows you to figure out what type of keywords and tags to use for your articles, it also allows you to figure out what topics to write on if you are unsure about what to write on.

This tool also helps you understand the public in greater detail, using this tool along side with Adwords keyword tool you will find yourself seeing endless possibilities.

Tips & Warnings
  • Think smart if you know that it is a topic that people will always want to know about, research on Google what terms people use to find their information. This opens up the door naturally for traffic to be driven to your work.
  • Are you a book reader and prefer to sit down and read on how to help yourself kick start your business or freelance writing? I have found that eBay and Amazon have an excellent resource of books at wonderful prices about Google and how to use Google to your benefit, I have provided the links for these books in the resource section below.
