Step 1
Invest in a carpet sweeper. They only cost $20-30, and make for a great quick carpet clean-up. They stow away easily, are light-weight, and clean all lint and crumbs off a carpet by being run over the carpet in a few strokes. It may not be a thorough vacuum job, but for guests who are on their way, it sure looks flawless!

Step 2
I also like to keep a box of Method or Clorox wipes handy. I don't use them often (I prefer vinegar and water), but they are convenient and quick for wiping down the stove (the messiest part of my kitchen), and can even be used for wiping up the more obnoxious spots on a kitchen floor. Remember--most folks won't notice an unmopped floor unless there are obvious spots on it. If you're in a hurry, take care of those spots!

Step 3
In the living room, fluff up those pillows and fold the blankets. A room can be as neat as can be, but if the couch pillows are scattered everywhere and there are blankets crumpled on the floor, it looks messy. Something as simple as folding blankets or draping them nicely over a couch can make all the difference.

Step 4
Keep bins handy for kids' toys, and keep as many toys as possible relegated to your kids' rooms. Toys easily get trailed around the house, sure, but your guests shouldn't have to pick their way through your living room to get to their seat. Throw any errant toys into a crate or bin kept nearby, and remember to occasionally thin out the bin, sending a bulk of the toys back to the kids' rooms.

Step 5
Don't forget the front porch! Remember what the old saying about first impressions. If there are guests arriving shortly, straighten any flower pots on the porch, and get rid of kid's bikes and toys. Re-coil the hose and sweep any dirt clods away. Even if the rest of your house is neat, the front porch is still a part of your home!
