Prepare for a Long Flight
Prepare for a Long Flight

The right preparation can make a long flight less boring and more tolerable. Here are things to consider when you prepare for your long flight.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

    Choose your luggage carefully.

The luggage you will need depends on where you are going and how long you plan to stay. The length of time will determine the amount you pack. However, I strongly recommend you pack mix-and-match outfits to keep down the weight which can be anything from $20 to $80.00 depending on the airline you choose. Also, many airlines have started charging for a second piece of checked luggage. Learn your airline rules before going to the airport.

  2. Step 2

Pack a light jacket, socks and a blanket.

At a minimum, the plane gets cold so you will want to have a light jacket or sweater for the evening. You will also need a blanket when you decide to go to sleep. In the past, airlines typically provided blankets, but with all the changes, I suggest you pack one. You should take your shoes off and let your feet spread and relax so bring a pair of socks or bedroom slippers.

  3. Step 3

    Pack snacks.

Pack snacks but be selective in your choices. You do not want to run to the lavatory every couple of minutes.

  4. Step 4

Carry extra batteries for the IPOD, laptop or other electronics.

You can use the IPOD to entertain yourself, such as read books, listen to music, watch a movie, and play games. The laptop can be good for more of the same but more cumbersome.

  5. Step 5

    Take a paperback.

Pick up a novel or magazine that you can enjoy reading or browsing at leisure. This will come in handy if you forgot to bring that extra power source for your electronics.

  6. Step 6

Minimize the amount of electronics you travel with.

Try combining technology as much as possible to avoid being held up in security or customs. If you have an IPOD, PDA, Cellphone, Camera and laptop you might get held up as they test each to ensure they are real and not “dummy” explosives.

  7. Step 7

Take chamomile tea or a sleeping pill.

If you have problem falling asleep, take something to help you. Eighteen to 24 hours is a long time to be awake and you will probably be changing time zones. Tip: If you are going to change time zones, start taking Melatonin about 24-hours before your trip.

  8. Step 8

    Walk, Stretch. It’s imperative.

You MUST get up and walk around, stretch your legs and body in the aisle. I recommend you move around every couple of hours. At a minimum, move your feet in circular motions in your seat. You can develop blood clots if you don’t and that can be detrimental to your health.

Tips & Warnings
  • When choosing luggage, keep in mind that many countries use cars and vehicles smaller than the American vehicles and it would be nice if your luggage fit inside the trunk.
  • Entertainment or keeping busy is the key to making a long flight pleasant.
